Friday 14 November 2025 marks Sustainable Smart Technologies’ first year as part of the Sustainable Investments Group. It’s been a very busy and productive 12 months for the business and, to illustrate that, we’ve set out a short retrospective of some of our most notable developments and achievements.
November 2024
One year ago, IoT Horizon officially became part of the Sustainable family and took on its new name and branding. The move enabled us to secure new investment to fuel our expansion and, just as importantly, it afforded better access to the social housing market and other sectors with considerable growth potential.
On 25 and 26 November, we exhibited alongside colleagues from Sustainable Building Services at Homes UK, a national exhibition and conference focusing on housing and asset management, development and sustainability. The event brought us exposure to thousands of housing professionals and highlighted our ability to help them improve the quality, use and sustainability of their housing stock.
December 2024
On 11 December, our managing director Niamh Allen appeared as a guest speaker at an event in Manchester titled “Women Leading Tech: Breaking Barriers and Paving the Way.” Hosted by pro-manchester, the morning discussion sought to shine a spotlight on women who have been shaping the future of the tech industry and taking a lead on innovation. In her presentation, Niamh spoke about the challenges associated with securing the necessary resources to drive innovation.
February 2025
On 26 February, we hosted an event at STFC Daresbury Innovation Centre, titled “Enhancing Air Quality in Manufacturing.” Together with guest speakers from Make UK and Westfield, we considered recent innovations designed to improve air quality in manufacturing environments, together with associated best practice and the benefits that smart monitoring systems can bring to managers.
Later in the month, we welcomed a new member to our growing team. Tayyib Jaffar-Ali joined us as operations engineer. Before joining us, Tayyib worked in Network Operations, where he was responsible for provisioning and deploying IoT devices, providing 2nd line support, implementing monitoring systems, and improving deployment processes through optimisation and automation.
March 2025
Between the 3 and 5 March, our team exhibited at the Futurebuild UK exhibition in London. The organisers describe the three-day event as “the only UK event dedicated to connecting innovation with specification.” It was therefore a fitting venue for us to explain the use and benefits of our technology to an audience comprising thousands of architects, contractors, local authorities, and government policymakers.
In the same week, our technical director Dan Bradley attended the Smart Manufacturing Summit in Derry, Northern Ireland. Running from the 5 to 6 March, the event was hosted by Ulster University’s Smart Manufacturing Data Hub and it examined emerging developments in areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT), digital transformation, big data analytics and AI. Appearing as guest speaker, Dan gave delegates an insight into the power of smart sensor technology and how manufacturers could use it to unlock efficiency, reduce downtime and enhance quality.
April 2025
April saw members of our senior team presenting to the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Board.
Commercial Director, Deyrick Allen explained our business development journey, and this was followed by a demonstration led by our Technical Director, Dr Dan Bradley. He showcased our technologies, which enable live energy monitoring, environmental sensing and occupancy reports – all operating within the Campus Technology Hub facility.
May 2025
On 2 May, we were named once again in the Liverpool City Region Tech Climbers List. We have been recognised in this way for three consecutive years now – testament to our growth and innovation. The event celebrates “trailblazing, product-led tech businesses who are innovative, investible and making ground-breaking impact.” The full list of winners can be seen here. At the same event, our MD, Niamh Allen joined a panel of speakers and outlined SST’s business transformation, our growth journey, and what these developments mean for the future.
We also expanded our software team when we welcomed Dale Wallbank, our Software Developer, he is fundamental to the continued development of our social housing platform.
June 2025
June was a busy month for events. The Ward Hadaway Fastest 50 Awards took place on 13 June at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. Here, our parent company, Sustainable Investments was ranked 11th overall, four places higher than in 2024.
The Housing 2025 exhibition and conference took place between 24 and 26 June at Manchester Central. A key event in the social housing calendar, it attracted delegates from a host of roles and sectors; housing associations, local authorities, developers, specifiers, asset managers and more. Our team exhibited alongside SBS staff and used the opportunity to make valuable new connections.
On 27 June, Deyrick Allen was guest speaker at an event titled “AI in Health and Safety.” This half-day learning event was hosted by the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) East Lancashire, and held at Burnley Impact Centre. It set out to show how AI is helping to improve and reshape health and safety practices in different sectors. Here, Deyrick showed how atmospheric sensors and AI are already protecting workers in industries ranging from construction to entertainment. He also provided real-world examples of AI-powered environmental monitoring applications, including tools that prevent poor air quality and automate reporting.
July 2025
On 17 July, we were proud to announce the launch of our new SST website. (You can read our announcement here.)
August 2025
In August, we expanded the SST team once again, this time with the appointment of junior sales executive, Archie Miller. He describes his first impressions of the business, the highlights of his first week, and his career aspirations here.
September 2025
The September edition of Lancashire Business View magazine included its annual Sub 36 Future Leaders list. In it, Niamh Allen was named amongst “the county’s very best up-and-coming talent” and recognised for her work in spearheading our growth and diversification.
October 2025
The following month, Niamh was once again representing us as a guest speaker at the LANDS online webinar hosted by Arts Lancashire. Here, she shared practical insights into how technology can support sustainability in the cultural sector, and explained how new technologies could help creative businesses to set baselines and monitor progress.
Looking Ahead
There’s no doubt that we’ve all been very active this year, and 2025 isn’t over yet. Looking to the future, we intend to keep building our presence in key markets and, of course, to develop new ones. In all this, our close relationships with our sister companies will certainly help.
Our partnership with SBS has been particularly valuable over the past 12 months, not least because it has enabled us to forge links with large social housing providers and procurement frameworks. A key example of this success is our contribution to a pilot scheme for Rykneld Homes. This initiative not only helped us secure new contracts but also created opportunities to demonstrate our expertise to a growing and increasingly diverse market.
Over the past year, we’ve made significant strides in deploying energy monitoring sensors within social housing properties. By measuring electrical load and usage patterns, we’ve helped housing providers assess the capacity of existing electrical systems and determine the safety and feasibility of installing energy-efficient solutions, such as air source heat pumps. This is a key part of our ongoing efforts to optimise energy usage, reduce carbon footprints, and enhance sustainability within the sector.
Moreover, our dedication to tackling damp and mould – critical concerns in many social housing properties – has been reinforced through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions. The data we collect plays a pivotal role in improving energy efficiency while simultaneously addressing health and safety issues for tenants, ensuring our solutions not only enhance energy performance but also the quality of living conditions.
We have also secured funding to support the expansion of our projects, enabling us to work with additional housing providers over the next 36 months. This will allow us to strengthen our presence in the social housing and energy efficiency sectors, leading the way in creating homes that are safer, more energy-efficient, and healthier for tenants.
