The graph below shows the effect of a ventilation outage on carbon dioxide levels in a brand-new, high-spec office suite. Staff reported headaches and there was a spike in sickness absence. When the mechanical ventilation is working, levels are good or excellent for over 85% of working hours; during the outage, this fell to 5% and levels briefly exceeded the HSE’s 8hr workplace exposure limit.
